No one who knows the film based on this novel will be able to forget the voiceover that recites the opening sentence of Daphne du Maurier’s most successful work: Rebekah. Thus begin the memories of the second Mrs. de Winter, transporting her back to the isolated gray mansion on the wet and windy Cornish coast. With a husband she barely knows, the young wife arrives at this vast estate to be inexorably drowned out by the ghostly presence of the first Mrs. de Winter, the beautiful Rebekah, dead but never forgotten. Her room remains untouched, her gowns ready to be worn, and her servant, the sinister Mrs. Danvers, still has an unhealthy devotion to her.
