‘Holy Cow’ is the story of a cow named Elsie Bovary. Elsie is a happy cow, whose life is spent following the placid routine of a farm located in upstate New York. One night, Elsie sneaks out of the stable and over to the house where the owners of the farm live. Elsie finds the whole family there staring in awe and reverence at an illuminated box. Suddenly, «the Box» shows something that will change her completely: she sees her bovine destiny cruelly summarized in some lurid images. Elsie decides she has to get the hell out of there. Elsie is joined by Jerry (sorry, Shalom), a pig converted to Judaism, and Tom Turkey, a boastful turkey who gives psychiatric advice with a German accent. The three of them determined to flee, they set off armed with false passports and colorful costumes to the nearest airport. Each of them dreams of reaching a different place: for Elsie, India; for Shalom, Israel; and for Tom Turkey, of course, Turkey. The freshness of Elsie’s narrative voice surprises us with her reflections on the contemporary world; he reproaches us for our lack of sensitivity and empathy with the planet and all its inhabitants; He makes us laugh with the sharpness of his comments on pop culture, on rock, and on the cinema and its stars. With an irony full of tenderness, David Duchovny’s charismatic creatures remind us of the rights of animals, and point us to the path towards tolerance and mutual understanding that we humans need today more than ever.
